Middle Schoolers Shine At Academic Challenge Meets
This week, Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center (MOESC) was proud to host hundreds of middle school students as they battled it out to be the Academic Challenge champion. Students compete as teams, answering questions about a wide range of topics including literature, fine arts, geography, history, math, and science.
Sixteen teams from Colonel Crawford, Crestview, Galion, Lexington, Mansfield City, Plymouth-Shiloh, Mansfield St. Peter's, Shelby and Wooster participated in the 6th Grade Academic Challenge on Tuesday, February 4th.
Wooster’s Edgewood Team A captured the crown. Luci Dean, Brooklyn Chelakadan, John Ngunjirr, Aaron Vandergrift, and Sam Heller comprised Wooster’s team. Lexington Team A with Jesse Halfhill, Alex Trolian, Aiden Johnson, and Addison Sigler came in second place.
Twenty six teams from Crestview, Colonel Crawford, Galion, Lexington, Madison, Mansfield City, Plymouth-Shiloh, Shelby Sacred Heart, Shelby, Mansfield City Spanish Immersion and Wooster participated in the 7th/8th Grade Academic Challenge on Wednesday, February 5th.
Wooster again came away with the victory. Their Edgewood team won first place with team members Kyia Walf, Shade Ellis, Isaac Nikkel, Jackson Stansifer, and Megan Kleinhenz. Lexington’s Team A was the second place team with Oden Bell, Jacob Halfhill, Kennedy Lamp, Grant Mentzer, Wyatt Miller, and Darcie Rinehart.
Leanna Ferreira, Gifted Student Consultant and coordinator of the Academic Challenge meets, said, ”We are giving students an opportunity to celebrate the academics in a safe, yet competitive nature. It is a place where being “smart” is celebrated in a similar environment to athletics.”
