Upcoming Professional Development from Student Services

The Department of Student Services at Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center has numerous professional development programs open for registration in August.

Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center will be hosting Crisis Prevention Institute, or CPI, training. The initial CPI course will be held August 9th and 22nd from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., while the refresher CPI training will be held August 12th from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. These are in-person training sessions that will be held at the Mid-Ohio Conference Center, 890 W. 4th Street in Mansfield.

Participants in the initial training should wear comfortable clothing and closed-toed shoes. When the physical restraint portion of the class is taught and practiced, you will be asked to remove scarves, ties, and any jewelry that could scratch. In addition to successfully demonstrating the application of physical intervention skills, individuals will be required to pass a post-test prior to being certified.

Physical holds are not practiced by participants in the refresher course but rather reviewed visually through demonstrations by the instructor.

Interested participants for any of the CPI courses may sign up at MOESC website, www.moesc.net/register. Client/Member cost for any of the courses is $60, while non-client cost is $75.

The Individuals with Disabilities Act, requires that each eligible student have an individualized education program (IEP). The contents of the IEP are designed to provide a road map for the child’s educational programming during the coming year. On August 23rd, the introductory course of Writing Quality Individualized Education Programs from A to Z will take place virtually from 10 a.m. to noon. Contents of the introductory course include:
• Least Restrictive Environment
• Procedural Safeguards
• Who is Responsible for What Within the Process
• Team and Meeting Preparation
• Legal Expectations for All Team Members
• Progress Monitoring and Data Collection

There will be 4 subsequent 1-hour virtual sessions from September through December. Interested participants may sign up at MOESC website, www.moesc.net/register. Client/Member cost for any of the courses is $80, while non-client cost is $130.

Specially designed instruction means adapting, as appropriate to the needs of an eligible student, the content, methodology, and/or delivery of instruction to address the unique needs that result from the student’s disability. Specially designed instruction is specific to each student and is necessary to address gaps and accelerate academic, behavioral, and functional progress toward attaining standards. Specially Designed Instruction can take place in inclusive settings as well as separate, self-contained classrooms and facilities. Specially Designed Instruction, Increasing Success for Students with Disabilities author, Ann Beninghof, offers the roadmap for providing specially designed instruction in any classroom.

What is SDI? Who is Responsible? How Do We Make it Happen? Presented by Mid-Ohio ESC Director of Student Services Jennifer Crum, this book study offers the toolkit for you or your team to develop specially designed instruction and ensures that you walk away with a thorough understanding and ready-to-use ideas. The virtual introductory session will be held on August 25th virtually from 2 to 4 p.m.

There will be 3 subsequent 1-hour virtual sessions from September through November. Interested participants may sign up at MOESC website, www.moesc.net/register. Client/Member cost for any of the courses is $85, while non-client cost is $135.
