MOESC Hosts Virtual Presentation on Dyslexia
Launch the media gallery 1 playerOn Tuesday, December 7, 2021 Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center will host Dr. David Kilpatrick for two identical virtual presentations on Understanding, Preventing, and Intervening with Dyslexia. Dr. Kilpatrick is a nationally-recognized reading researcher, professor, school psychologist, and author of several well-known books on reading, including Essentials of Assessing, Preventing, and Overcoming Reading Difficulties, and Equipped for Reading Success.
According to the International Dyslexia Association, dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. Dr. Kilpatrick’s sessions will focus on how children learn to read words and why some children struggle. He will also explain how understanding word-level reading development and word-level reading problems (dyslexia) guide both instruction and intervention.
Lynn Meister, Mid-Ohio ESC Director of Teaching and Learning, said, “We are honored to host Dr. Kilpatrick. He is a highly-respected, national expert on reading difficulties, including dyslexia. The session will focus on how children learn to read words and why some children struggle. As we look to implement Ohio’s new Right to Read dyslexia law next year, Dr. Kilpatrick’s sessions will help educators better understand dyslexia to prepare for those requirements. Interested participants can sign up here. There is no cost for member districts, and the fee for non-member districts is $75 per person. Participants will choose from two identical virtual presentations: 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. OR 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. The session link will be emailed to participants a few days before the December 7 event.
