MOESC Hosts Early Literacy 101 Virtual Training

The Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center will present an Ohio Child Care Resource & Referral Association (OCCRRA) approved preschool training on Friday, January 8, 2021. The virtual session, Early Literacy 101, will allow participants to learn critical skills to introduce students to literacy in a preschool setting. The training will take place from 9:00 - 11:30 a.m.

Deborah L. Dubois, an OCCRRA-approved trainer from this area, will present a variety of important concepts during this hands-on professional development opportunity:

  • six early literacy skills children need to be ready to learn to read;
  • five practices that help children develop the six skills;
  • facts about brain development and how experiences help children learn;
  • how books are used to help children develop early literacy skills; and
  • creating learning activities to use in the classroom.

Participants will need to have a few books available that they would use with children and materials needed to complete the activities. The list of materials, and the Zoom link, are available to participants after registration.

Lynn Meister, Director of Teaching and Learning at Mid-Ohio, is excited to present this opportunity for teachers in the area.  “At the request of our client districts, we are offering this valuable session to enhance teachers’ skills in teaching literacy, a critical foundation for students before they enter kindergarten.  We are looking forward to providing this hands-on, virtual professional development on January 8.”

To register and receive OCCRRA credit, participants should visit the OCCRRA website at occrra.org to enter their login credentials and search for the class.  Participants will receive a Zoom link, instructions for the class, and handouts to prepare for the session.  The cost per participant, payable by purchase order to Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center, is $25 for client districts and $45 for non-client districts. Anyone with questions should direct them to Wendy Harvey at harvey.wendy@moesc.net.

Participants who do not require OCCRRA-approved credit may also register at www.moesc.net/register.  Registration ends January 7, 2021.
