Upcoming Professional Development from Student Services

The Department of Student Services at Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center has several professional development programs coming up this month. First, a Special Education Legal Update will be held on December 1st. A video series entitled “Take Your IEP Knowledge to New Heights” will be available starting December 1st. Finally, Cohort A in the Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS) program will hold their Tier II one-day training on December 14th. 

Miriam Fair, James McWeeney II and Peter T. Zawadski, attorneys at law with Walter | Haverfield, will present the Special Education Legal Update. The virtual seminar is from 9 a.m. to noon on December 1st, and will include the topics of Discipline of General and Special Education Students, Residency of Students, Custody, Professional Conduct, Discipline, and Termination. Registration is free and a link will be sent.

“Take Your IEP Knowledge to New Heights” is a 3-video series presented by Jolene Edwards, Special Education Consultant with Mid-Ohio ESC, specifically serving Abraxas School of Ohio and The Foundations for Living F.I.R.S.T School. She received her Bachelors of Education in Early Childhood Education in 2004 from The University of Toledo, Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, Mild/Moderate Intervention Specialist from Ashland University in 2013 and her Masters in Educational Leadership from Ashland University in 2016. Over the past 13 years, she has served students with emotional and behavioral disabilities. In that role she incorporated the use of her therapy dog Diesel who is also still able to make a difference at F.I.R.S.T School, where he can attend periodically.

The three videos are 1: Child Profile and Post-Secondary Transition, 2: Measurable Goals and Progress Monitoring, and 3: Specially Designed Instruction. The series is to be done at your own pace, but must be completed by January 31, 2022. One hour of one-on-one coaching is also included. The cost is $50 for client districts and $60 for non-clients.

On Tuesday, December 14th from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Cohort A of the PBIS program will hold a Zoom workshop to prepare building and district PBIS teams to attend the two-day training on Tier II implementation in their school district. Cathy Csanyi, Educational Consultant, will present. Ms. Csanyi has 20 yearsʼ experience training, coaching and implementing the PBIS framework. Ms. Csanyi worked for six years at the Ohio Department of Education and was one of the original members of the state team that developed the state training and coaching model. Cost is free for client districts and $75 for non-clients.
