MOESC Hosting School-Based Therapy Training

Mansfield, OH (December 5, 2023) Registration is open for Mid-Ohio ESC’s school-based therapy training, Vision for the School-Based Therapist, which will be held on December 13th at MOESC from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The training is for occupational therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapist assistants, and physical therapist assistants and is free to all MOESC employees and $50 for non-MOESC employees. 

The presenter will be Robert Constantine, OTR\L a 1997 graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Occupational Therapy program where he was awarded the Charles Brooks Award for Creativity. Robert has practiced in home health and skilled nursing contexts. He spent 9 years as the clinical specialist in brain injury at the West Florida Rehabilitation Institute where he developed a passion for evidenced-based treatment, sharing information and the functional effects of the visual system. He enjoyed a 3-year tenure at an optometry practice where he learned techniques working closely with low vision, pediatric and adult optometrists. He has completed Clinical Level 1 and 2 training offered by the Neuro-Optometric Rehab Association.

Course Description: Poor reading, poor handwriting, clumsiness...it all ends in a referral for the school-based therapist. But is it sensory? Behavior? ADHD? Dyslexia? Something else?? This course will teach the school-based therapist to recognize the signs of vision-based learning problems, then assess the visual system to uncover the root cause of academic difficulty. The therapist will learn the best standardized assessments to capture the visual dysfunction and simple, inexpensive techniques to improve ocular motor skills to improve academic performance.

Course Objectives

• Learn to spot the signs of unrecognized vision problems affecting your student's performance.

• Learn evidence-based techniques to assess and treat visual dysfunction.

• Is it a vision problem or is it dyslexia? Learn to spot the difference.

• Learn a simple technique that could improve reading, posture and more.

Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center provides specialized academic and support services to 13 school districts and over 20,000 students in Crawford, Morrow and Richland Counties. Client districts receive services from curriculum, gifted and special education consultants, speech pathologists, psychologists, special education teachers, occupational therapists and physical therapists.
